The first residency programme in Emergency and Urgent Medicine in Portugal began this Thursday.

'If we don't have internal medicine trainers we can't keep the ship afloat. It's alarming,' said João Carlos Ribeiro of the National Medical Internship Council on Wednesday in Parliament.

The workers' committee warned the minister that, if she did not suspend INEM's decision on training this week, it would seek an injunction. It also warned that hospitals would face higher costs.

They complain that the current formula allows candidates with better scores in the PNA to be surpassed by colleagues with lower scores, solely due to a statistical “normalisation” of course averages.

The exam that allows candidates to rank their choices for specialised training took place on 26 November. A total of 2,834 candidates were registered, having studied for months to reach this moment.
