Analysis by the Centre of Marine Sciences focused on over a thousand occurrences recorded over 46 years in the Algarve. 45% of the animal death cases point to interaction with fishing as the cause.

A study identified 19 species of cetaceans that washed ashore, with the common dolphin being the most frequent and the dwarf minke whale being the most common among whales.
