Bolhão knife sharpener's application accepted into the National Network of Intangible Cultural Heritage
The traditional profession of knife sharpening is at risk of extinction, but André, the knife sharpener at Porto's Bolhão Market, has successfully registered his craft with the National Network of Intangible Cultural Heritage. A third-generation artisan, André continues the legacy of his father and grandfather, using his signature flute melody and sparks to attract customers. His wife, Susana Monteiro, initiated the application to help preserve this piece of Porto's history, with hopes of expanding the craft's reach and potentially opening a museum. Today, André operates a stall at the market where he sharpens various tools, repairs umbrellas, and offers workshops to tourists and locals alike.
