The Real Gabinete Português de Leitura today received the insignia of the Order of Camões from the Portuguese state. The institution, nearly 200 years old, was 'created by the Portuguese and offered to Brazilians'.

A nearly 200-year-old library in Rio de Janeiro is the second institution outside Portugal to receive the decoration. It holds 350,000 volumes and a first edition of Os Lusíadas from 1572.
