Portugal recorded fewer flu cases last week and a reduction in intensive care admissions, but mortality from all causes remains above expected levels, according to the National Institute of Health Dr Ricardo Jorge (INSA).

The influenza epidemiological surveillance bulletin shows a 'stable' trend in the incidence of severe acute respiratory infections.

Laboratory surveillance indicates moderate viral circulation: 850 tests were carried out on 425 suspected cases between 5 and 12 January, with a positivity rate of around 10% for influenza A and B.

All-cause excess mortality rose last week, and cases of severe acute respiratory infection remain higher among people aged 65 and over, INSA reports.

Excess mortality follows a pattern consistent with the epidemic phase of seasonal influenza and is most pronounced in older age groups, particularly among those aged 85 years and over.

Lisbon, 23 December 2025 (Lusa) — More than 51,000 people were vaccinated against influenza in the past week, bringing the total number of people immunised since the start of the seasonal vaccination campaign in September to 2,477,875, according to data from the DGS released today.
