Filmmaker João Canijo has died. He was 68 and had spent more than 40 years devoted to film. In 2023 he won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Filmmaker João Canijo has died. He was 68 and had spent more than 40 years devoted to film. In 2023 he won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The film had already been honoured at the Scottish BAFTAs and at the San Sebastián and London film festivals.

The ceremony is currently taking place in the German city. It was the first award of the evening, for a debut feature film, presented tonight by the European Film Academy.

The first person to be credited as cinematographer on a Portuguese feature film, Inês Carvalho received the Bárbara Virgínia Prize 2025, awarded by the Portuguese Film Academy and named in honour of the first woman to direct a fiction film in Portugal in 1946. In her thank-you speech she acknowledged the importance of being a pioneer: 'It's good to know that I opened a path.'
