Complaints against the actions of the PSP and GNR have increased since 2014, but many are archived
The Inspectorate-General of Internal Administration (IGAI) reported a significant rise in complaints against security forces, with 1,722 complaints filed in 2025, marking a continuous increase since 2014. Despite the growing number of complaints, many are archived without leading to disciplinary actions. Inspector-General Paulo Figueiredo emphasized that the increase in reports does not correlate with a rise in inquiries or disciplinary processes. The IGAI, which monitors the actions of the PSP and GNR, received 1,511 complaints in 2024 and 1,436 in 2023, indicating a trend of heightened public concern regarding police conduct.
