Capwatt's biomethane production unit in the Alentejo region reached “cruising speed” in April and is producing 70 tonnes per week. The company has other projects in the pipeline in Monforte, Ferreira do Alentejo and Tomar.
Projects in Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Amadora, and Seixal are expected to begin injecting into the grid by 2026

Portugal’s power grid, REN (Rede Electrica Nacional), has announced the first issuance of ‘guarantees of origin’ for biomethane produced at the Aljustrel production plant on March 20. REN – Rede Eléctrica Nacional announced this Thursday, the 9th, that it carried out on March 20th 'the first issuance of guarantees of origin for biomethane produced in Portugal' at the Aljustrel production plant. In a statement released today, the energy company notes that these issuances 'certify the origin of the biomethane produced by Capwatt at the Aljustrel Biomethane Production Plant', making REN 'the first entity to receive a production certificate for this renewable gas in national territory'. REN explains that these certificates prove to the consumer that part of the energy used was produced from a specific source and technology. 'In the case of renewable energy, the issuance of these guarantees allows for the certification of the energy's origin, enabling retailers and end consumers to demonstrate their renewable energy consumption, particularly in the context of their sustainability strategies and respective obligations,' the company says in the document. REN highlights that in the case of biomethane, these guarantees of origin are particularly relevant for 'ensuring the traceability and valuation of renewable gases', thus promoting the 'decarbonisation of sectors that are difficult to electrify'. Delays in the biomethane market leave the country with less energy sovereignty.

On March 20, REN – Rede Elétrica Nacional carried out the first issuance of Guarantees of Origin (GO) for biomethane produced in Portugal. 'This issuance marks a new milestone in the development of the national renewable energy market and in the consolidation of the European energy certification system,' states REN in a press release.

At issue is the licensing of a facility that, through the recovery of bio-waste, could produce biomethane and compost, with the capacity to process 25,000 tonnes per year.

In recent years, energy has returned to the centre of geopolitics. Not just as a commodity, but as an instrument of power, dependency, and influence. The war in Ukraine clearly exposed Europe's energy vulnerability. For decades, a significant part of Europe's natural gas supply relied on a relatively stable relationship with Russia. When...

A warning that limited biomethane supplies mean Portuguese companies must secure all available volumes, since demand will exceed supply.
