The most concerning case in the south of the country was observed at Peneco beach (Albufeira), with a maximum retreat of the beach berm of 24 metres.

Preparatory work for artificial beach nourishment on the Quarteira-Garrão stretch in Loulé, on the Algarve coast, began today as a measure to reinforce coastal protection following the effects of bad weather.

Landslides and rough seas have taken their toll, removing a significant portion of the sand from the beaches.

The situation remains relatively calm at Furadouro beach in Ovar, CNN Portugal reporter Hugo Pereira Santos reports. Cleaning work continues on the seafront promenade, which has been overrun by sand due to rough sea conditions.

The environment minister expects a project to replenish the sands in the area before the start of the bathing season. Local traders are worried about the extent of the damage.
