Banco de Portugal warns of fraud involving debit cards sent by post

The Banco de Portugal (BdP) has issued a warning regarding a new scam, urging citizens to be cautious if they receive an unsolicited debit card in their mailbox, as it may be fraudulent. The regulator advises against acting on urgent demands, such as threats to block accounts, and notes that criminals may use stolen personal data to make the correspondence appear legitimate. The BdP clarifies that banks send replacement cards well in advance of expiry and that activation should only occur via official channels like ATMs, official websites, or banking apps, never through links or contacts provided in suspicious letters. The Portuguese Banking Association has also warned of fraudulent phone calls being made in its name.

The Portuguese Banking Association (APB) issued a warning this Wednesday regarding fraudulent calls from individuals falsely claiming to be their employees. The APB states that these callers allege suspicious transfers or irregular operations on the recipient's bank account to solicit personal data, banking credentials, and authentication codes. The association clarifies that it does not monitor private accounts, contact bank customers about suspicious activity, or request security credentials. It advises the public to hang up immediately, contact their bank through official channels, and report the fraud attempt to the authorities. Additionally, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) has warned of a separate scam involving fake PayPal calls regarding fictitious purchases.
