We remember the reckless Icarus from the Beira region, who launched himself from the towers of Viseu Cathedral with the ultralight wings he built and strapped to himself, and the statue at the Air Museum in Sintra that immortalised him.
“Most of the people on my street walked to the station with their briefcases, and I would get in the car to go to the airport to fly the Concorde to New York. It was an excitement and a thrill every day when I went to work,” says one of the captains who flew the aircraft before it was retired.
