An outbreak of bird flu has been confirmed at a chicken farm in Tomar and in a seagull in Vila Real. However, transmission to humans is virtually nil.

Portugal has recorded 54 cases of avian influenza since the start of the year.

The Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs has been warning of the “high risk of spread” of avian influenza and has ordered the confinement of domestic birds across the entire mainland territory.

Since the beginning of the year, 49 outbreaks have been detected in eight districts of the country.
