Virtus athletics grows in Portugal based on the work of clubs, families and the federation
The Portuguese men's athletics team has once again stood out on the international stage by winning the team title at the Virtus World Indoor Athletics Championships in Ourense, Spain. This victory marks Portugal's third consecutive world title in this competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Over three days of competition, the Portuguese delegation secured 14 medals—six gold, seven silver, and one bronze—reinforcing the consistency of Portuguese athletes across various disciplines. José Silva, the team leader, attributed this success to a collective effort involving athletes, coaches, families, and clubs. He highlighted that the integration of athletes with intellectual disabilities into mainstream clubs and regional structures is key to the sport's growth and the discovery of new talent. Looking ahead, the federation aims to increase the number of athletes in the Paralympic and Paralympic hopefuls projects to build an even stronger delegation for future Paralympic Games.
