Europe breaks renewable energy production record in the first quarter

Europe set a record for electricity production from renewable sources in the first quarter, with a 15% increase in solar and 22% in wind power compared to the first quarter of 2025, according to consultancy Montel. Total renewable energy production reached 384.9 terawatt-hours (TWh), driven by record solar output, a recovery in wind power, and strong hydroelectric generation. This increase in clean, local electricity helped mitigate the impact of the conflict with Iran on wholesale electricity prices by replacing gas-fired generation. Despite record volumes, the share of renewables in the energy mix stood at 48.8%, lower than in previous quarters, due to cold weather conditions that pushed demand to its highest level since 2022.
