The couple suspected of neglecting the healthcare, nutrition, and hygiene of a 98-year-old woman was sentenced today by the Setúbal Court to 22 and 20 years in prison. The victim's son received a 22-year sentence, while his partner received 20 years, aligning with the Public Prosecutor's request. During the hearing, the judge highlighted the defendants' lack of empathy and coldness, noting that from 2022 until Maria da Nazareth's death on December 12, 2024, they denied her medical care, even after she fractured her hip in 2023. A forensic expert testified that the victim died from a lung infection resulting from the untreated fracture. The defense lawyer, Pedro Pestana, plans to appeal, arguing the crime should be classified as domestic violence resulting in death rather than qualified homicide.
