Portugal was preparing to build its first nuclear power plant in Ferrel, Peniche, but on March 15, 1976, the church bell rang out and the residents, armed with hoes and pitchforks, drove away the workers in charge of the project. The episode marked the end of the national atomic plan and the genesis of the environmental movement. Today, with the energy crisis caused by wars, nuclear power is returning strongly to the European agenda.
