"When you decide to make a film outside the system, you know there are consequences": for Iranian director Ali Asgari, cinema and humour are political acts

Ali Asgari decided not to accept the rules of the Iranian regime. He does not ask for permission to make his films; he shoots and screens them clandestinely. It is this fight against the absurdity of censorship and bureaucracy that he shows in his latest film, “Terrestrial Verses”, currently showing in Portugal. The director left Iran shortly after the American attacks began, but he wants to return - and hopes the war will end by then. “People are losing their lives, losing their families, their jobs,” he says in an interview with CNN Portugal.
