The US Vice President expressed “pride” in the Donald Trump administration's decision to suspend funding and arms shipments to Ukraine. JD Vance's position was made known on Tuesday (April 14) during an event in Athens, Georgia. He stated that he remains proud of the administration's stance, telling Europe that while they are free to purchase weapons, the United States will no longer buy or send them to Ukraine. Since taking office in January 2025, President Trump has shifted US policy regarding the war in Ukraine, a conflict ongoing for over four years. Trump has frequently criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, alleging a lack of interest in ending the war, and has suspended direct funding and arms supplies to Kyiv. Under the Trump administration, the PURL (Priority Ukrainian Requirements List) mechanism was launched, allowing NATO to acquire weapons from US stocks for Ukraine through funding from member states. In October, Portugal's Minister of National Defence, Nuno Melo, announced a 50-million-euro contribution to this initiative, alongside a 10-million-euro investment in a British drone initiative that also supports the national defence industry. Meanwhile, drone attacks against Ukraine have resumed following the Orthodox Easter truce, and Zelensky claims the US ignored evidence of Russian support for Iran due to “trust” in Putin.
