PS once again requests constitutional review of loss of nationality for serious crimes

The PS will again request that the Constitutional Court (TC) review the decree amending the Penal Code, which provides for the loss of nationality as an accessory penalty, approved earlier this month by the PSD, Chega, IL, and CDS-PP. This decision was announced by the PS parliamentary leader, Eurico Brilhante Dias, in statements to journalists.

Context & Explainers

The Nationality Law (Lei da Nacionalidade) sets the rules for who can be a Portuguese citizen, covering birth, descent, naturalisation, marriage and long-term residence. Its approval alongside the 2026 State Budget means changes to those eligibility rules will be implemented as part of the government's 2026 policy package, which the prime minister said will affect the country's stability and competitiveness.
