Three challenges for work in Portugal: innovation, productivity, and gender equality

During the week of May 1st, International Workers' Day, it is essential to look at the future of work in Portugal with clarity. This is the moment to recognise three structural challenges that will define our economic and social model: the impact of innovation and Artificial Intelligence, the urgent need to increase productivity through balanced labour reform, and the elimination of the gender pay gap. The first challenge is innovation, as automation and AI rapidly transform the labour market. The second is productivity and labour law, where Portugal continues to lag behind the European average, necessitating a collaborative approach to reform. The third is gender equality; with a 15.4% pay gap, closing this divide is not only a matter of justice but a significant economic opportunity, with potential to boost GDP by approximately 1.5%.
