The Hospital Beatriz Ângelo in Loures will serve as a central facility in Portugal's new regional obstetrics network, responding to five health regions beyond its immediate area, including Oeste, Médio Tejo, Lezíria, and Estuário do Tejo. The reorganization, published shortly before the launch of the first regional gynecology and obstetrics emergency, clarifies service roles and staffing needs based on recent activity levels. For example, the hospital, which performed 2,620 births in 2025, is recommended to have 21 obstetricians and 42 specialized nurses, with additional staff if births exceed 3,000 annually. However, a significant shortage of obstetric specialists across Portugal, especially in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, challenges meeting these staffing targets.
