Additional surgeries: Dermatology teams at Santa Maria Hospital ordered to repay 818,000 euros

The General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS) has concluded that dermatology teams at Santa Maria Hospital must repay approximately 818,000 euros in improperly received payments for additional surgeries. The repayment obligation affects 28 health professionals, including 16 doctors, following an audit of surgical activity between 2021 and early 2025. The investigation found that the surgeries performed were minor procedures that did not qualify for the specific outpatient surgical payments received. The case involves significant irregularities, including the improper coding of surgeries and the lack of proper registration in the national surgical waiting list system. The Public Prosecutor's Office has already incorporated the IGAS report into an ongoing criminal investigation.
