Social network X suspends 800 million accounts in 2024 related to manipulation

The social network X suspended 800 million accounts in 2024 for violating platform policies on manipulation and spam, an activity in which Russia stands out as the primary state actor. In a hearing at the UK House of Commons, the company stated that it suspended 800 million accounts in 2024 for failing to follow its policies on manipulation and spam, and that several hundred million other accounts were removed at the end of last year. According to data from the organization Statista, the social network has more than 415 million global users and 300 million monthly active users. Although it did not detail the suspended accounts linked to foreign interference, the social network revealed that Russia is the main state actor with the most manipulation attempts on the platform, followed by Iran and China. Regarding accounts related to Russia, XCorp government affairs executive Wifredo Fernández explained that the deleted accounts presented a “particular narrative” with the intention of undermining the 2024 US presidential election and deepening polarisation. Social network X appeals against a 120 million euro European fine. Study indicates that the social network X's algorithm leads to more conservative political positions.
