Births increased in Portugal. One third of babies are born to foreign mothers

The number of children born in Portugal rose by 3.7% last year to 87,764, with about one-third of babies born to foreign mothers, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced on Thursday, May 30. While releasing vital population statistics for 2025, the INE highlighted that the natural balance worsened, although the Greater Lisbon region maintained a positive balance for the third consecutive year. The number of deaths increased by 2.9% compared to 2024, reaching 121,817. Of these, 246 were infant deaths under one year old. The decrease in infant mortality and the rise in live births led to a drop in the infant mortality rate to 2.8 deaths per thousand live births. In 2025, 37,714 marriages were celebrated in Portugal, an increase of 1,081 compared to 2024.
