More than 80 flights to or from Madeira were cancelled today due to adverse weather conditions, according to ANA – Airports on their official website. The information provided by ANA, consulted by the Lusa agency in the late afternoon, indicated that 43 arrivals and 42 departures were cancelled. Some connections occurred but were diverted, while others were preemptively cancelled by airlines. Since this morning, 10 planes have landed and 13 aircraft have departed from Madeira International Airport – Cristiano Ronaldo. ANA warns that “weather forecasts indicate adverse conditions that may affect operations (departures and arrivals) in the coming days,” urging passengers to contact their airline to confirm the status of their flight before heading to the airport. The Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) of Madeira recommended today the adoption of preventive measures due to the passage of storm Regina, which is expected to affect the weather until Wednesday morning. In a statement, SRPC warns of the possibility of falling branches or trees, as well as “impact on communication and energy infrastructures.” The passage of the storm is also expected to cause loose objects to be swept onto roadways and the detachment of structures due to strong winds, potentially causing accidents with vehicles or pedestrians in public areas, adds the regional authority. Flooding in urban areas, drainage difficulties, coastal overtopping, among other occurrences, may also occur, according to SRPC. The regional authority recommends adopting preventive measures to mitigate the impact of adverse weather, especially in more exposed and potentially vulnerable areas. Civil Protection emphasizes the need to ensure the “unblocking of storm drainage systems, removing debris and other objects that could be swept away or obstruct water flow,” as well as properly securing loose structures, such as scaffolding and others. The regional authority urges the public to exercise special caution when moving near wooded areas and the coastline. Travel to affected areas should be avoided, and the public should stay informed about weather updates and follow the guidance of Civil Protection and security forces, reinforces SRPC. The recommendations are based on information from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which predicts that storm Regina will bring precipitation, snow, strong winds, and rough seas. The storm is expected to be centred in the eastern part of the autonomous region on Tuesday and will gradually move southeast the following day, no longer affecting the weather from Wednesday morning. On Thursday, a cold front is expected to pass, bringing cloudy skies and rain. The adverse weather has also affected operations at Madeira International Airport, leading to the cancellation of over 80 flights today.
Madeira Civil Protection warns of precautions due to storm Regina. 80 flights cancelled

Context & Explainers
Aviso amarelo (yellow warning) is the second level in Portugal's weather-alert system issued by the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) to signal potentially dangerous conditions like heavy snow or rough seas. When districts are under aviso amarelo, expect travel disruption and take precautions—drivers, boaters and coastal residents in the affected areas should be especially alert.
Civil protection (Proteção Civil) is the national system that coordinates prevention, response and recovery for disasters and emergencies in Portugal; the Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil (ANEPC) oversees planning, warnings and coordination with fire brigades, police and municipal services. In weather events—such as snow or road closures around Serra da Estrela—Proteção Civil issues safety advisories, may close access routes and coordinates rescue and relief efforts, so people in affected areas should follow official guidance and call 112 for emergencies.
