Court upholds 25-year sentence for Ismaili Centre killer and refuses to deem him unaccountable

The Central Criminal Court of Lisbon has upheld the 25-year prison sentence for the man who confessed to killing two women at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon in 2023, rejecting claims of mental incapacity. Despite a diagnosis of schizophrenia and mixed personality disorder, the court ruled that it was not proven he was under the influence of these conditions at the time of the crimes. The ruling follows a partial retrial ordered by the Supreme Court of Justice due to procedural issues regarding the defendant's mental health status. The defendant, Abdul Bashir, had argued self-defence, but the court maintained the conviction for 11 crimes, including two counts of aggravated homicide.
