In recent times, we have been immersed in a growing sense of instability, with news cycles dominated by armed conflicts and extreme weather events. This article explores how the erosion of safety—whether through geopolitical conflict or climate-related disasters—severely impacts the global tourism industry. Citing studies from the University of Beijing and the University of Birmingham, the text highlights how security threats cause long-term economic damage that extends beyond the affected regions. It further argues that in Portugal, local municipalities must urgently implement climate action plans to protect their communities and economies, pointing to the collaborative PLAAC-Arrábida project as a model for effective, evidence-based governance. Ultimately, the author concludes that safety is the fundamental prerequisite for any destination to thrive.
