Cartaxo Alves takes office today as Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces

General João Cartaxo Alves has officially taken office as the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMGFA) following his appointment by the President of the Republic. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Palácio de Belém, marking a significant moment as it is the first time in over a decade that an Air Force officer has held this position. General Cartaxo Alves succeeds General José Nunes da Fonseca and will oversee a period of substantial investment in Defence, with €5.8 billion allocated for modernization efforts across the military branches.

Update: New Appointments Confirmed

Lieutenant General Sérgio Costa Pereira has been appointed as the new head of the Air Force, succeeding General Cartaxo Alves. Additionally, General Eduardo Mendes Ferrão has been reappointed as Chief of the Army for another two years, as confirmed by the government during a recent electronic Council of Ministers meeting.
