The President of the Republic marked in Strasbourg the 40th anniversary of Portugal's accession to the EEC and urged Europe's allies to understand that 'there are no sole masters of the globe, there are no eternal powers, and our alliances and partnerships are worth more than the froth — however spectacular, however seductive — of each day.'
