There are expressions that encapsulate complex realities. When analysing the data on the wealth generated in Portugal's various regions, interpretations multiply. Of the Alentejo we might say it is 'stuck in a rut', while Madeira and the Algarve could be described as 'living in the shade of the banana tree' — although the expansion of these regions through tourism does not depend solely on that.
