The Government's bill amending the Nationality Law will return to the Portuguese parliament on April 1st. The approved changes affect children of foreigners born in Portugal, who will no longer be entitled to automatic nationality, and increase the residency requirement for Brazilians to apply for citizenship from 5 to 7 years. On April 1st, parliamentarians will perform a bureaucratic step to formalize the discussion of the veto by former president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who sent the proposal to the Constitutional Court for review. The court deemed some measures unconstitutional. With the discussion on the 1st, the Government may present the revised text for a vote. If approved by the deputies, the new president, António José Seguro, will review the bill.
