New regulations for dual-national Britons are causing issues for children and teenagers attempting to return home. According to The Guardian, at least four teenagers have been denied entry to the UK since Thursday due to border control rules implemented by the British government on February 25th. While short-term visitors can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation for £16, dual nationals returning home face a different situation: they are now required to present a British passport. Without one, they must pay £589 for a certificate to travel, which must be attached to their other passport. Many youths lack a British passport and have refused to pay the high fee, leaving them stranded in countries including Denmark, Spain, Canada, Australia, and India. These new entry requirements have sparked outrage among dual nationals, coinciding with reports of a meningitis outbreak in the UK that has resulted in 27 cases and two deaths.
