A group of researchers from the School of Science at the University of Minho (ECUM) is developing smart microfibres capable of regulating the temperature of construction materials, such as bituminous pavements and cement mortars for urban buildings. In the future, they could be applied in technical clothing or in the passive thermal management of satellites and aerospace sensors.

Context & Explainers
Sustainability (sustentabilidade) means meeting present needs without reducing the ability of future generations to meet theirs, covering environmental, economic and social dimensions. For residents it affects local planning, jobs and services—look for municipal or company targets, timelines and measurable actions when assessing how sustainable a place or employer is.
