University City of Lisbon, May 10, 1962. About 90 students were on a hunger strike in the university canteen after declaring academic mourning in protest against the revocation of university autonomy and the suspension of Student Day. The University Senate gave one hour for the canteen to be evacuated, otherwise, the matter would be handed over to the police. The students did not give in, and the PSP entered the canteen. Nearly 100 students were arrested, including Jorge Sampaio, who was held in Caxias for 3 days.
