Blood technician arrested by the PJ suspended from duties and banned from entering Coimbra by the court

The blood technician arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of embezzlement, corruption of substances, and/or spreading disease was banned by the court on Friday, April 24, from entering Coimbra and suspended from his duties, the Judiciary Police (PJ) announced. Avelino Lima, director of the PJ's Central Directorate, stated that all proposed coercive measures were accepted by the judge at the Coimbra District Court. The 66-year-old suspect is prohibited from visiting his workplace at the Blood and Transplantation Centre in São Martinho do Bispo and from contacting witnesses or staff. The investigation, which began in January following a report from the Portuguese Institute of Blood and Transplantation (IPST), suggests the suspect stole and manipulated sterile connection blades used in blood component production to sell the copper for profit, potentially risking contamination of blood products.
