The Figure of the Day: Inácio Ludgero

In Lisbon, at the Âmbito Cultural space in El Corte Inglés, almost all the details that matter regarding the early days of democracy in Portugal are on display. There is no place or book that explains more intimately the time when the founders approved the Constitution. These 15 photographs are few, but enough to understand what was at stake and why people on both the left and the right were fighting for a new Portugal. Inácio Ludgero is all of that: the most politicized of all Portuguese photographers, an artist who sacrificed sculpture and creation for journalism, and a politician who used his camera as a rhetorical weapon. These are powerful images of people with fire in their eyes, capturing the passion of rare, absolute moments. Ludgero is a major photographer, often unfairly forgotten in the rankings of the best of the best.
