São João (St. John's Eve) is Porto's biggest festival, celebrated on the night of June 23-24. The city fills with bonfires, spectacular fireworks over the Douro, sky lanterns, grilled sardines, and the unique tradition of hitting people on the head with plastic hammers (or leeks, traditionally).
