Health Minister warns hospitals are in critical state
The Health Minister said emergency departments are in a “very critical” situation and are unlikely to improve this week, as reports pointed to more than 5,000 people in urgências at the same time nationwide. The surge adds to long-running strain on the SNS and is likely to mean longer waits, especially for non-urgent cases. Expats should use health centres and family-doctor routes where possible, and consider private options for urgent-but-not-emergency needs.
“Urgências” are hospital emergency departments (ER/A&E), which in Portugal are often used for both true emergencies and urgent walk-ins. When they are crowded, triage prioritises the most severe cases, meaning long waits for less-urgent problems.
