Freedom can be written with a capital or lowercase letter, yet they end up being slightly different concepts. The 25th of April, the 52nd anniversary of which we celebrated last Saturday, was and is—and will be, I hope—a day of Freedom. Not to fulfill a programme, however good it may be, nor to achieve 'conquests', however just they may be. The central idea—and those who were at Largo do Carmo know it—was only one: Freedom! No one thought about getting a raise, working less, or having a decent home. Only Freedom, because with it came the end of the war and, most likely, a series of other consequences that the people, in due time, would demand. It is that Freedom, with a capital letter (uppercase, as they say in typography), that many do not know how, or do not want, to celebrate.
