The Public Security Police (PSP) announced this Friday, April 24, that they have arrested nearly 2,000 drivers for drink-driving this year and fined another 1,320 for the same offence, warning of the increased risks of driving under the influence of alcohol. In a statement, the PSP indicated that since January 1, they have carried out 6,551 road safety and enforcement operations, checked 223,908 drivers, and performed 66,020 breathalyser tests. Of those tested, 3,229 were driving over the legal alcohol limit, averaging 29 alcohol-related offences per day. The police noted that 1,909 of these drivers were arrested for criminal levels of alcohol, while 1,320 were fined. The PSP expressed concern over these infractions, highlighting that a blood alcohol level of 0.5 grams per litre doubles the risk of a serious or fatal accident. They further explained that alcohol consumption narrows the field of vision, delays decision-making and reaction times, and impairs coordination. Within their jurisdiction of urban centres, the PSP reported 18,445 accidents this year, resulting in 30 deaths, 229 serious injuries, and 5,082 minor injuries.
