The CEIIA Conferences began this week with an excellent session featuring physician and researcher Manuel Sobrinho Simões on 'More Longevity', a highly relevant topic for our society. Sobrinho Simões delivered a message of confidence regarding our capacity to live longer, while also warning of the need to live better within our community context. The session highlighted the positive evolution of longevity indices in developed countries and the resulting societal impacts, including pension funding. Isabel Furtado, president of CEIIA, emphasised the importance of work-life balance and preparing for retirement. While progress has been made in treating diseases like cancer, mental health remains a growing concern. The challenge of longevity requires a generational contract and a renewed sense of community, as noted by Alberto Castro and supported by the insights of Linda Grayton in 'The New Long Life', focusing on quality of life and meaningful contributions to society.
