Teachers' movement proposes creation of a pool of educators for overtime work

The Missão Escola Pública (MEP) movement is advocating for a national platform to mobilise teachers for paid overtime, aiming to address the immediate shortage of staff in schools. The proposal, dubbed the National Extraordinary Teaching Platform (PNDE), would allow teachers to register their availability and set their own terms. The movement argues that the current system lacks the incentives needed to make the profession attractive and that the government is failing to provide structural solutions or accurate data on the number of students without teachers. MEP also criticised the ongoing negotiations regarding the Teaching Career Statute, stating that current measures are insufficient to retain staff or resolve the systemic crisis in public education.
