Lufthansa cancelled hundreds of flights from German airports this Wednesday, the 15th, affecting nine connections at Portuguese airports due to a two-day cabin crew strike, according to the German public broadcaster ARD. By 12:45, nine flights to Frankfurt and Munich had been cancelled at national airports, according to the ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal website. Since midnight, around 20,000 workers have been called to strike by the UFO union. The strike affects all Lufthansa departures from the main German hubs of Frankfurt and Munich, as well as those of its subsidiary Cityline. The action was announced on Friday to exert pressure during collective bargaining negotiations. This cabin crew strike follows a two-day walkout by pilots, which caused the cancellation of over 700 flights on Monday. Furthermore, pilots have called another 48-hour strike for Thursday and Friday. VC union president Andreas Pinheiro stated that there has been no movement from the employer regarding the pension dispute. Today, the group celebrates the centenary of Lufthansa's first regular flight with a ceremony in Frankfurt, where Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder are scheduled to speak. Both UFO and VC have called for protests at the event. Lufthansa claims it is maintaining approximately 75% of its flights during the two-day strike.
