Catholic Church pays over one million euros for sexual abuse

The Catholic Church has concluded its financial compensation process for victims of sexual abuse. The Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP) announced that 57 claims have been approved, with payments ranging from 9,000 to 45,000 euros, totalling over one million euros. Out of 95 total requests received, 78 were deemed eligible for review, while others were rejected due to factors such as the victim's age at the time of the incident or the accused not being affiliated with the Church. CEP spokesperson Manuel Barbosa expressed deep regret and reiterated the Church's commitment to ongoing support, prevention, and fostering safe environments to ensure such abuses do not recur.
