PSP arrested over three thousand drivers and recorded more accidents in the first quarter

The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested more than three thousand drivers in the first quarter of the year, nearly half for drink-driving. During these months, there was an increase in accidents and serious injuries compared to the same period last year, though the number of fatalities remained the same. In a report released on Tuesday, April 14, the PSP noted 3,206 arrests for road traffic offences, including 1,510 for drink-driving and 1,033 for driving without a valid licence. The force recorded 15,080 accidents in the first quarter of 2026, up from 13,592 in the same period of 2025. While fatalities remained at 20, serious injuries rose to 172 (up from 144) and minor injuries increased from 3,960 to 4,050. The PSP conducted 5,322 road safety operations, checking nearly 180,000 drivers and monitoring over 598,000 vehicles via radar. A total of 56,023 traffic offences were recorded, including 7,921 for speeding, which the police highlighted as a major concern. Additionally, 53,342 breathalyser tests were performed, resulting in 1,510 arrests for drink-driving. Other common offences included mobile phone use while driving, lack of vehicle inspection, lack of insurance, and failure to use seatbelts.
