Lufthansa guaranteed today that approximately 75% of its flights should be maintained during the two-day strike, which ends this Tuesday, called by the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit. Contacted by the Agence France-Presse (AFP), Lufthansa stated that the rate of flights maintained across the entire group amounts to 'about 75%'. About one-third of short-haul flights and half of long-haul flights will be operated by the Lufthansa brand during the strike, which was called due to disputes over pensions and worker remuneration. At Eurowings, a Lufthansa subsidiary where the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) called a one-day strike, the rate of flights maintained is about 60%, according to the group. The strike affects flights from the Lufthansa brand and its subsidiaries CityLine and Eurowings, as well as the cargo division Lufthansa Cargo. Contacted by AFP, the VC union was not yet able to provide its own figures. According to a spokesperson for Frankfurt Airport, Germany's largest, 'about 570 flights' were cancelled today across all air traffic, including other airlines, representing about 43% of flights. On Saturday, a Lufthansa spokesperson had described the strike as an 'unprecedented scale' and declared that the union's main demand, 'which consists of doubling a company pension scheme that is already above average and excellent, is absurd and unachievable'. According to the president of the VC union, Andreas Pinheiro, 'employers have not shown any concrete willingness to find a solution throughout several collective disputes'. Even so, Andreas Pinheiro stated he is leaving the door open to dialogue, since 'employers have, at any moment, the possibility of avoiding the strike by presenting negotiable proposals'. The last strike by Lufthansa pilots and its subsidiaries dates back to March 12 and 13 of this year. Hundreds of flights were cancelled in Germany due to the strike by Lufthansa cabin crew.
