D. Carlos Marine Reserve opens for public consultation; environmentalists hope risks to this biodiversity oasis will be kept at bay

The creation of the new D. Carlos Marine Reserve has just been put out for public consultation, which will run until 6 March. It will be the largest Marine Protected Area in Portugal, encompassing the Madeira-Tore seamounts and the Gorringe Bank, covering an area of 173,000 square kilometres. It is an offshore reserve nearly twice the size of Portugal’s land territory.
