The GNR reported 4,179 offences related to mobile phone use while driving in the first three months of the year, a risky behaviour that has been increasing and reached its highest level in three years in 2025. The police force warns of a continuous rise in these offences, describing the figures as worrying. Data shows that 2025 saw a total of 18,631 detected offences, an 8% increase compared to 2024. Although there was a 25.5% decrease in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, the GNR highlights an alarming upward trend in March 2026. Porto and Lisbon remain the districts with the highest volume of offences. The GNR continues to urge drivers to use hands-free systems and to avoid distractions, emphasising that this behaviour severely compromises road safety.
