Gender identity for ‘dummies’: why is it so hard to understand?

Sometimes things need to be explained simply and directly: gender identity is what each person knows, feels, and experiences about themselves. It is not complicated, contagious, a trend, or a disease. It is simply who a person is. The proposal to repeal Law No. 38/2018 represents a serious setback for the human rights of transgender and gender-diverse people. Returning to a model that requires a clinical diagnosis of 'gender incongruence' to change one's name or gender marker confuses health with human rights. Clinical support should be available when needed, but not as a condition for exercising a fundamental right. Furthermore, removing rights for transgender youth, such as the use of a social name, ignores scientific evidence showing that family and social support are essential for mental health. Revoking this law would be a regressive step for Portugal, a country that has been a reference in human rights.
