Public Prosecution magistrates' union to hold national strike on April 24

Public Prosecution (MP) magistrates will hold a national strike on April 24. The strike was announced by the president of the Public Prosecution Magistrates' Union (SMMP), Paulo Lona, on April 6. The strike notice has been sent to the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General's Office (PGR). Lona explained that the protest concerns the 2026 magistrate placement process, known as the 'movement'. The union fears that the model used last year, which they claim increases workload and reduces specialisation while ignoring regional realities, will be repeated. Lona stated that the current model is 'inadmissible' and that the strike is a legitimate tool to defend professional standards and demand a more rational and well-resourced public service.
